Saved Me $45. When renting a car on the road, you need to use every trick in the book to
save on your car rental.
 One important tip is to try to make sure your return
time is close to the same time as or earlier than your arrival time because car
rental companies charges are based on a 24-hour period. Once you exceed your 24
hours, they usually give you up to a 30-minute grace period but after that they
start charging by the hour. If you return your car three hours after your
original pickup time of day, believe it or not, they will charge you for another
full day.
I usually try to arrive at the airport up to two hours before departure when
I'm renting a car. This gives me ample time to return the car and go through TSA,
etc. On my recent trip to Tampa/Clearwater I picked up my car at 4:30 p.m. on a
Thursday. My return trip was at 2:40 p.m. on Monday.
Our free weekend car rental discount applies to cars picked after noon on
Thursday and returned by 11:59 p.m. on Monday. In my case, the car was rented
for four days. This qualified me for two discounts. The first one from
Bestfares.com was for a percentage off. For the second discount, I was able to
double dip and get one car rental day for free.
Usually the car rental companies DO NOT take the
discounts or free days off my bill immediately. I was told that you must first
keep the car for at least three days before the discount is deducted. I have
used this double dip coupon at least 10 times in the past year. I can't tell you
how many of my friends have used this discount.
I also suggest that even though your discount promo codes are entered on your
rental, always stop at the Budget car rental desk and request that they
recalculate your bill just to make sure they apply your discount. I also print
out the terms and conditions on the special page.
On my latest trip, the car rental was $161 for four days for a midsize car.
(Remember, the discount only applies to compact up to full size cars). It took
about two minutes, but my $161 four-day rental rate dropped to $116. That's 45
bucks. Now that was nice.
