So the major airlines want to charge you between $20 and $50 to check a second bag? Only Southwest Airlines has no fee for the first or second bag checked. Not only are you paying for the second bag, on five airlines you pay $15 to $25 for the first bag.

This may be enough deterrent to reduce the number of bags you have checked. It may also help the airlines report less lost bags per passenger.

Listed below are some questions regarding checked baggage. At the end of the story is a link you can click on to see the answers. We think you'll probably get most of them wrong.

Q. What checked items are exempt as checked luggage and may still either be checked for free or not be counted as checked luggage?

Q. In 2007, airlines misdirected checked bags to the tune of 42,000,000 bags worldwide. That's an average of 115,000 bags per day or 80 bags a minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. How many checked bags were misdirected by US airlines in 2007?

Q. Who loses more checked bags per thousand passengers, European airlines or US airlines?

Q. Which US airline has the highest fee for the first or second checked bag if the bag weighs between 50 and 70 pounds? We will tell you that the fee might include the $15 charge for the first checked bag as well as an extra $125 fee for an overweight bag, costing you $140 one-way or $280 roundtrip above the price of your ticket. If you checked two bags over 50 pounds, you would pay an extra $280 for the first bag and $290 for the second bag for a total of $570 extra above the price of your ticket.

Q. Which airline charges the least amount for the first and second checked bag and for both bags weighing between 50 and 70 pounds? The fee, in this case, is $25 per extra bag or $50 total. That's a big, big difference compared to $570 for two overweight checked bags.

Q. Which US airline permits your first bag to weigh up to 70 pounds and be checked for free?

Q. Which major airline permits their elite frequent fliers to check two bags weighing up to 70 pounds each for free?

Q. Most major airlines permit two checked bags for international travel. What international destination is the exception?

Q. Can you name the only two US airlines as of today that also charge for the first and second checked bags to Mexico, Caribbean and Latin America?
