Southwest Airlines was the only major USA airline to report a
profit for the 2nd quarter of 2008 (April through June).
Southwest was smart, by
locking in 70% of their fuel at less then .55 cents a barrel. Plus, when it
comes to airfares, Southwest is the price setter. As we enter the fall,
Southwest will continue to have the advantage for not charging so many fees.
United Airlines was at the top of the list for losing $2.73
billion. American Airlines reported a loss of 1.45 billion. American Airlines
took a big hit in April when government inspectors shut down over 3,000 American
Airlines flights and stranding over 300,000 passengers.
Continental Airlines numbers were very impressive, even though
they lost $3 million.
Here is a list of the total dollars lost by the major airlines
for the 2nd quarter 2008.
