Was Spirit Airlines Trying To Pull The Wool Over Our Eyes With Their $10 Roundtrip Internet

Everyday major U.S. airlines compare millions of airfares being offered by their competitors including low cost carriers such as Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue, Air Tran Airway, Virgin America, Frontier and Spirit Airlines.

In many cases, the major airlines match the low airfares to remain competitive. What was unfair was that Spirit Airlines, which has more fees on top of more fees than any other U.S. airlines, wanted more fees. Now most major airlines, except for Southwest Airlines, charge up to $35 for phone reservations on top of the prices of the airline ticket. (Click here, to see our chart on reservations by phone.)

However, to offer can airfare and then to say the only way you can buy it is to add a hidden $10 roundtrip fee on top of that is very misleading. That's exactly what Spirit Airlines was doing. Tease with cheap airfare and before you buy it you're told it's really going to cost you $10 more. The called it a "Web Convenience Fee."  Give us a break.

Spirit Airlines also will not allow you to get seat assignments on your flights 24 hours or longer in advance without paying a $5 fee for a reserved middle seat, $10 for a window seat, and $15 for an isle seat. That's per flight segment! So if you make a change in plans, you will pay for both flights. Spirit Airlines also has the most expensive soda-pop on the plane at a cost of $3 per soda. US Airways charges 2 bucks. They also have a $15 fee for the first checked bag if prepaid online or $25 if paid at the airport. $25 for the second bag.

On Thursday, July 22, 2008, Spirit Airlines suspended the online booking fee.
