American Airlines And Air Canada To Begin Charging $25 For Second Checked Bag

American Airlines today became the last of the domestic legacy carriers to adopt a $25 charge for coach customers to check a second bag. Third, Fourth and Fifth checked bags will cost $100 each.

The charge goes into effect today for travel beginning May 12 on tickets purchased on American Airlines and its regional subsidiary American Eagle, the carrier said. The carrier, like the other six major carriers, said it would exempt some elite frequent flyer members and international itineraries, but also said it would shield purchasers of full economy fares from the fee. American estimated that only 4 percent of domestic customers would be subject to the charge.

Air Canada also announced that it will soon start charging its lowest-paying customers a $25 fee to check a second bag on domestic or U.S. flights. The new policy goes into effect on May 15.
