Delta Airlines Becomes The Third Major Carrier To Charge For Second Piece Of Checked Luggage

Email to a Friend Email to a Friend

Delta Airlines has joined United Airlines and US Airways in charging $25 for a second piece of checked luggage (Delta Airlines change is effective May 2008). But it doesn't stop there.

Delta Airlines is the only airline already charging a whopping $80 for any checked bag over 50 pounds (although United Airlines has announced that effective May 5, 2008 they are going to charge ($100 !) But wait, there's more!

Delta Airlines will apply EACH of the applicable fees to any one piece of luggage that is considered excess in number, excess in weight, and excess in size. So you can check one bag, 50 pounds or less, for free. But that second bag is going to cost you at least $25. If it's also 51 pounds (up to 70 pounds) you'll pay another $80 (total so far $105). And if it's also between 60 and 82 inches (total dimensions, over 82 inches is not permitted) there's another $100 fee (total is now $205).

And if you've got a third, fourth or fifth bag it gets worse. Those bags are each an $80 fee. If they're oversize and over weight you're now up to $260 per bag. Bags number six, seven and eight start at $110 each. Overweight and oversize, you're gonna pay $260 per bag.

There's more. That overweight fee of $80 will cover luggage from 51 to 70 pounds. If it's 71 to 100 lbs that individual fee almost doubles to $150. And yes, they allow you to check up to 10 pieces of luggage but number's nine and 10 start at $150 each and get the same additional fees for overweight or oversize... or both.

Oh, by the way, those fees are just for domestic travel. Outside the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico; the second bag is $25, 3-5 are $150 each, 6-8 are $300 each, and 9 & 10 are $600 each (plus those same oversize and over weight fees).

Now that three of the legacy carriers are charging for a second piece of checked baggage, it's probably only a matter of time before the others join in. We get it that extra baggage means extra weight and higher fuel costs but if you need to travel with two, or more, pieces of luggage consider Southwest. It recently cut back on its luggage allowance, too - from three to two.
