It looks like Delta Airlines wasn't satisfied with last weekend's unprecedented -up to $50- increase. All the legacy airlines joined in on that last increase, which was initiated by United Airlines.
If this one sticks, it will be the 5th consecutive week that we've seen ticket prices go up, either as fuel surcharge increases or actual ticket price increases. We haven't seen that many increases in such a short period of time... ever!
It's also pretty unusual to see any airline take this action midweek, although we've seen it happen before. It does give the other carriers a few extra days to evaluate the situation and decide if they will match the increase. We'll keep you posted.
We find it pretty interesting that there are still markets, like San Francisco to San Diego, or Houston to Austin or Corpus Christi, where there are roundtrip airfares for as little as $58 to $78 roundtrip, when this latest increase by Delta will have "increased" - yes, that's "increased" - the fares on some short-haul markets by as much as $90 and on other routes by as much as $130 since just this past December.
If you're not traveling in a market served by a low-cost carrier, be a savvy traveler and look for alternate departure and destination airports that are. Otherwise, plan on spending more of your vacation and travel budget on just getting there.
